If you are just starting out with windsurfing and search for equipment online, you will surely come across a question: Why do many teaching institutions and clubs recommend windsurfing boards of around 220 liters? Is it really that good?
When I first saw the number 220L, I actually felt a bit puzzled. After all, on the internet, one could always see experts riding boards with only 90L or 110L and flying around at high speeds, looking both fast and cool. But the 220L large board always seemed a bit “heavy” to me.
It wasn’t until I actually started learning that I realized, for beginners, 220L doesn’t make you play faster, but it makes you learn faster.
1.I first tried windsurfing, I thought the biggest challenge was controlling the sail.
The result is completely different.
The real difficulty lies in – getting up there.
The sea surface is not as stable as the land. The board keeps gently swaying with the waves. If the board doesn’t have sufficient buoyancy, as long as the body’s center of gravity is slightly off balance, one will immediately fall into the water.
And the 220L buoyancy board gave me a great sense of security.
When standing on the board, it wouldn’t tilt violently due to even the slightest movement. I had enough time to slowly adjust my body posture and could focus on learning how to hold the pole and hoist the sail, rather than constantly swimming to retrieve the equipment.
Later, the coach also told me:
In the beginner stage, what is learned is movement, not balance.
This sentence left a particularly deep impression on me.
2.The greater the buoyancy, it doesn’t mean slower speed, but rather higher learning efficiency.
Many people tend to misunderstand and think that 220L is a “beginner’s toy”.
Actually, it isn’t.
The most important thing in learning windsurfing is to master several basic movements:
* Boarding (Uphaul)
* Finding balance
* Setting sail
* Turning (Tack)
* Downwind sailing
* Upwind sailing
If these movements cause you to lose your balance even when standing, then there is simply no way to practice them.
The 220L windsurfing board is wide and stable, which enables learners to repeatedly perform the same movements.
I remember that during my practice of hoisting the sail, the first few dozen attempts were all failures.
If the board is too small, every time you fail, you have to fall into the sea and start all over again. Your energy will soon be exhausted.
However, the 220L board allowed me to stand on it and practice repeatedly. After several hours, my movements became smoother and I gained more confidence.
The learning efficiency has really improved a lot.
3.It’s not “unable to flip”, but rather it gives you more chances to make mistakes.
When many people purchase equipment, they always aim to get everything they need at once.
“I will definitely play the advanced board game in the future.”
So they directly chose 120L, 140L, or even smaller boards.
The result is often:
* Could not board the board;
* Couldn’t raise the sail;
* Continuously fell into the water;
* Eventually began to doubt whether one had natural talent for sports.
Actually, it isn’t.
It’s just that the equipment and technical level are not compatible.
The greatest advantage of the 220L is that it allows you to make mistakes.
Stand a little off-center, it’s okay.
You can ease up on the sail raising a little; it’s not a big deal.
If the turn fails, the board won’t immediately flip over.
For beginners, this error tolerance rate is extremely important.
Because every success brings the motivation to keep learning.
4. Who is the best candidate for the 220L windsurfing board?
Based on my own learning experience, I believe the following types of people are particularly suitable:
(1) The first-time users of windsurfing boards
For those without any prior experience, it is recommended to choose around 220L.
The learning experience will be much more enjoyable and you won’t lose interest because of constantly falling into the water.
(2) Learners with a higher body weight
If the weight is above 70kg, or even around 80kg, the large buoyancy can provide better support.
It becomes more stable when standing and the practice time will also be longer.
(3) Players who hope to play with their families
The 220L large board not only allows you to learn how to use a sail, but some of them can even have the sail removed and be used as a SUP (stand-up paddle board).
Each family member can try it in turn. This way, there will be more usage scenarios and it will also be more cost-effective.
5. When should the smaller board be replaced?
Many friends often ask me:
“Is it okay to just keep playing at 220L?”
The answer is certainly not.
220L is more like a “coach” during the learning stage.
When you have already been able to:
* Steer the sail steadily;
* Control the direction proficiently;
* Be capable of conducting sailing in headwind, crosswind and tailwind conditions;
* Rarely fall into the water frequently.
At this point, you can gradually start trying out 160L, 140L, or even smaller boards.
Because the small plates have less resistance, they move faster and are also easier to perform advanced movements.
However, this process must be carried out in a step-by-step manner.
There is no need to make learning painful in order to acquire “expert-level equipment”.
6. My biggest takeaway: Equipment should facilitate learning, rather than causing frustration.
Looking back at the time when I first started learning, if it weren’t for the 220L board at that time, I probably wouldn’t have been able to stick with it.
Many people, when watching videos of skilled athletes, only see their rapid sliding and graceful jumps, but fail to notice that they have also fallen into the sea time and again.
Every skilled windsurfing boarder has almost certainly gone through the stage of learning with a large board first.
The 220L windsurfing board may not look as cool or fast as other options, but its greatest advantage lies in this: **It enables beginners to spend more time learning the techniques rather than repeatedly falling into the water. **
For those who are new to windsurfing, a stable large board is often more significant than a faster small board.
If I were given the chance to choose again, I would still make the same decision without hesitation – the 220L model. Because what truly matters is not how professional the equipment looks, but whether it can help you enjoy the learning process, build confidence, and gradually fall in love with this sport.
